Reading 1, Totally True 1 Review 2
July 9th, 2006 — Public Files
This is the same format as the previous review lesson I posted.
The aim of this lesson is to review most of the key vocabulary presented in lessons five to eight. It is also meant to be a way of getting students mentally and physically active (pair work, followed by group work as teams), and a ‘fun’ way of reviewing language.
There are three activities and I have suggested approximate times that each should take based on experience using similar activities in previous classes.
• Review 1 – Pair work - Jigsaw reading (35 minutes)
• Review 2 – Group work (combine pairs from Review 1) Crossword (15 minutes)
• Review 3 – Quiz (Snatch) (35 minutes)
Level 2 Reading: First Semester Final Test with Answers
July 5th, 2006 — Public Files
Here is the first semester final test with answers.
• There is no need to print out the tests, they will be printed for you.
• Apart from the spelling questions which are each worth half a point, each question is worth one point.
• To help prevent any cheating, there are two versions of the test available; Version A and Version B.
• To allow the tests to be re-used, the completed tests should be taken in and not returned to the students.
Extra Details
1) The test requires students to know enough of the words to put them into a cloze. There are also a lot of questions tapping a purely receptive understanding, and a few spelling items.
2) The cloze sections are summaries of the stories in the units. So, the students who regularly come to class will be at an advantage.
3) Some students will finish much quicker than others. To keep the fast finishers occupied, there is a riddle at the end. The answer is on the answer sheets.
4) There are two versions of the tests to provide an obstacle to any nefarious test taking strategies. The tests cover the same material, but the questions are in a different order.
5) The test can be given any time that suits the instructor. However, it’s inadvisable to leave it to the last class.
Let me know if you have any questions or find any problems!

Level 2 Listening and Speaking Let’s Talk Unit 6 Activity
July 5th, 2006 — Public Files
This is an activity that can be used in both Listening and Speaking or Writing classes to work on sequence markers. I started the activity by brainstorming cooking vocabulary on the board, then gave the handout the students. I explained the pasta recipe, and drew attention to the sequence markers. Students wrote out their favourite recipes, then in pairs or groups took turns explaining them to each other.

This is a companion worksheet for the Level 2 Speaking Task 2 Video, which can be found on DVD on the Level 2 shelf and on the ELP web page. It is basically a listening comprehension exercise that will require students to go over the video a few times in order to answer all the questions. As such, the video is best viewed on computer.

If you are not clear what will be covered in the Final Exam, please have a look at pages EV16 and EV17 (near the back!) of the English Firsthand 1 Teacher’s Manual. This is exactly the same test as the students will be doing.
The level 1 team will prepare copies of the exam for you, and you will also be given a cassette tape or CD (we are not sure which yet) for the listening section.
Time is very tight, and it will not be easy to squeeze in much review in the class. Therefore, students will need to do most of the review work in their own time.
This handout should point them in the right direction:
