This PowerPoint presentation is designed to support the Passages textbook Unit 2a ‘Education and Learning’ on pages 10, 11.
The teaching materials include:
1. A PowerPoint presentation
2. A Student worksheet
3. A link to a website for an interactive quiz
4. This teacher’s notes page
You can use these materials in a number of ways, for example to introduce the topic or to review the topic. It is important though, that you go through the different slides first to familiarize yourself with the presentation.
The teacher’s notes sheet provides more information on how to use this material.
As with previous PowerPoints, you will need a computer in the class. Additionally, there is an interactive quiz to reinforce the grammar focus (p. 11). For this you will need the FLSC if you choose to do this part of the presentation.
These materials will also be available in the Level 3 binder.

This activity has been designed for Level 2 Unit Three topic ‘Hobbies’. There is a worksheet for students to do along with my self-introduction on the ELP homepage.
The self-introduction movie for this worksheet reviews Unit Two vocabulary (about personalities) and introduces Unit Three vocabulary (hobbies).
A suggested way for students to use the materials is:
1. Watch the video once to understand the general meaning.
2. Do the exercises on the worksheet from what can be remembered from the video and from what can be guessed by looking at the context.
3. Check the answers by watching the video again. (Students can work at their own pace and stop/ replay the video at any time.)
Ideally this is an FLSC/Computer room activity. So perhaps after Golden Week?? Alternatively, students could do this activity as homework. Just print off the sheet and have the students access the ELP homepage in their own time.

Here’s a quick activity to get students thinking about how to combine short sentences or clauses using ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’ for their first paragraph.
It can either be used as a worksheet or you could make it more active by cutting up the sentences and distributing one half to some students and the other half to others. They should then look for their respective half and make a full sentence using one of the words above.
I have also added a note to the worksheet to dissuade them from using ‘and’ or ‘but’ at the beginning of a sentence.

If you are extending the Chindogu (new product) activity, these handouts might help. One is a general reading passage about the Chindogu phenomonon. The second handout incorporates the pictures that are already available but provides a set pallette for creating a product name and description of 5 of the pictures.

The aim of this material is to prepare EAP students for the writing task,
“If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer”.
1. Students can first discuss the high school they went to.
2. They can then be shown a PowerPoint that contains a listening passage about my high school and the one thing I would change. In this they are first asked to listen for specific information. They can then listen again but this time with the text presented. Students can discuss the answers in pairs.
3. Discuss something they would change about their high school.
4. Students read attached worksheet that models an essay plan for the above topic and then use the same outline to prepare for their own essay.

Purpose
Primarily, this song can be used through the semester at any level (although level 1 will need plenty of support) as a 15~20 minute activity to add variety to the class: three or four stanzas every week or two. It could also be used in the last class after feedback as a ‘fun’ activity.
• It can be used as a simple listening activity. Primarily, ~ing forms, unstressed syllables, prepositions are the focus of the listening.
• It can be used for pronunciation practice (the song has a powerful and simple rhythm).
• It can be used for performance. The song is full of actions and the people in it (four) can be played by students as the music plays (especially if you have Sobun students!).
• It can be used for comprehension practice.
• It can be a source of vocabulary (see Damian Fitzpatrick’s vocabulary self-assessment sheet) and to encourage out-of-class listening/practice.
• It can be used for anything!

This year, a Notebook has been added as an assessment for Level 2 Eigo IA. Worth 20% of the semester grade, this Notebook will consist of a mix of vocabulary, mind maps, and journal writing. It is up to the instructor to set the relative balance of these three tasks to suit the needs of the class. Some instructors may also ask students to attach worksheets inside the notebook, or keep other kinds of class notes in this Notebook as well.
Download the following documents for details, assessment, and examples.

This is a modified version of something that a colleague, Dexter Da Silva, previously passed onto me and it can be adapted to suit any level and can be carried out as often as you wish.

These are short dictation activities that you may want to use to change the pace of a class, support lower level students or to introduce variety.
There are four activities:
1. A basic dictation activity taken from the back of Totally True 1
2. Fill in the gaps - key vocabulary
3. Fill in the gaps - articles, prepositions, connectors, unstressed syllables etc
4. Find the mistakes
These are based on the dictation activities, but the same principle can be applied to the main reading section at the start of each unit.
You may want to ask your students, individually or in pairs, to attempt to fill in spaces or guess the mistakes before the listening.

For Levels One and Two, Participation Grade is worth ten percent of the students’ grades for both Eigo IA (Listening and Speaking) and Eigo IB (Reading and Writing). Specifically, the Participation Grade has been sub-divided into English Use, Classroom Participation, and Classroom Behaviour. To ensure the Participation Grade encourages students to meet the course goals of improving their English and enhancing their study skills, it is important that learners receive updates on their Participation Grade progress during the semester. The handout in this posting should be given to the students. Learners should review their own performance, and get feedback from their teacher. The Participation Grade should not simply be used as reward/punishment that is only introduced at the end of the semester.
