Jim has made a great set of cards we use in the EAP course which suit this unit perfectly. They are of crazy inventions and there are six sets of A4 size cards. They can be found in an old green ‘Film Pouch’ box at the bottom of the folder shelf in the part time area.
Procedure:
- Put students into groups and have them answer two questions:
1. What is the invention for?
Example: I think it’s using when you have a cold.
2. Make up a product name.
Example: Tissue helmet.
- Collate answers on OHP or board.
I used this as an introduction to the unit and the students really enjoyed the humorous ideas presented.

Cat and Couple are Homeless
Ordering Activity
Here is an ordering activity using a similar Cat Adventure story to the one students will read in Chapter 13. You can choose to have the students cut the story into strips, or you can prepare it beforehand. When it is time to show the order of the story, open this file in class and page two of the document is a good size for showing on the OHP. This way you can easily highlight key words, phrases and ideas you might like to focus on.

Fashion Star
For this lesson, teachers could choose either of these ideas to prepare students for the following ‘Fashion’ topic.
One is stimulus for a conversation about Harajuku Fashion, to be taught any way you choose.

The next is a fun (I think so anyway) cloze exercise based on How to Dress Like a Ganguro Girl. The accompanying audio file can be found on CDs available from 2/10/2007 on the Level 2 shelf. Answers/ Transcript are at the end of the page.

Hope these bring life to the topic for your class!

Level 2 Reading Chapter 11
This is a short warm up activity to get the students interested in the topic. There is a quick introduction of the key language and then some photos of four ads presented in unusual ways. The students have to guess what the ad is for.
All you have to do is go to this site in class and open the PDF file. The page will come up with the key language, the pictures and finally the answers.

Do your students need to learn how to add detail to their paragraphs? The aim of this material is to show students how to move from an overly simple paragraph to one with great detail. Check out this straightforward PowerPoint and attached worksheet to see if you think it will come in handy in your writing class.

This activity has been designed for Level 2 Unit Three topic ‘Hobbies’. There is a worksheet for students to do along with my self-introduction on the ELP homepage.
The self-introduction movie for this worksheet reviews Unit Two vocabulary (about personalities) and introduces Unit Three vocabulary (hobbies).
A suggested way for students to use the materials is:
1. Watch the video once to understand the general meaning.
2. Do the exercises on the worksheet from what can be remembered from the video and from what can be guessed by looking at the context.
3. Check the answers by watching the video again. (Students can work at their own pace and stop/ replay the video at any time.)
Ideally this is an FLSC/Computer room activity. So perhaps after Golden Week?? Alternatively, students could do this activity as homework. Just print off the sheet and have the students access the ELP homepage in their own time.

The aim of this material is to prepare EAP students for the writing task,
“If you could make one important change in a school that you attended, what change would you make? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer”.
1. Students can first discuss the high school they went to.
2. They can then be shown a PowerPoint that contains a listening passage about my high school and the one thing I would change. In this they are first asked to listen for specific information. They can then listen again but this time with the text presented. Students can discuss the answers in pairs.
3. Discuss something they would change about their high school.
4. Students read attached worksheet that models an essay plan for the above topic and then use the same outline to prepare for their own essay.

More jazz chants to bring joy and laughter to your class…..(ha ha)
Numbers
Pronunciation Blitz:
1B Jazz Chant
This practice aims to make the difference between teen and ty explicit (a very common problem among our students wouldn’t you agree!)
Look below and you will see the ‘lyrics’. These numbers should firstly be practiced in rhythm. After this, get the students to write a bingo type grid of three by three. Have them fill in the boxes with numerals that are similar eg: 13 30 15 50 etc. In groups of four they can play a game like karuta/snap whereby the person who wrote the numbers calls out a number and the other two players have to try and touch the correct number first. This will give them both oral and aural practice with numbers.
A)
Teen teennnn thir thirteen
Teen teennn four fourteen
Teen teennn fif fifteen
Teen teennn six sixteen
Teen teennn seven seventeen
Teen teennn eight eighteen
Teen teennn nine nineteen
B)
Twenty twenty ti ti ti
Thirty thirty ti ti ti
Forty forty ti ti ti
Fifty fifty ti ti ti etc
The Alphabet
Do Activity 3 on page 5 with an adjective and a noun of that letter instead of just any word. For example, angry ant, beautiful banana etc. Silliness is encouraged.
Choose good examples from around the class and write them on the board. Practise as a Jazz Chant.
First practise just the adjective combinations and then do the whole phrase: ‘A as in angry ant’ etc.
The reason for doing the jazz chant is that it clearly shows which words are stressed and unstressed. A as in ANGRY ANT
If you happen to have Chinese students like I do, they also tend to have a problem whereby they don’t release the final consonants (especially plosives like t/p etc), making it hard to understand what they say. Encourage students to release final consonants- angry anT.

The following are a few jazz chants I made up to teach stress and rhythm patterns as well as correct pronunciation for language taught in Unit 1A. If you are looking for something that is ‘light and easy’ and that will help consolidate or review what you have taught, maybe this will be of use to you.
Clap out the pattern first and let students follow along. Then introduce the following questions to the beat. Please listen here:
1A Jazz Chant
What are you studying?
What do you do?
Where are you from?
I want to get to know you!
What’s your favourite song?
Where do you work?
What’s your address?
Tell me tell me please!
How many brothers do you have?
Do you like toast with cheese?
After students have had practice, try to speed it up. This will improve fluency and should be fun. Of course it will also help them learn the new question patterns relevant to this chapter.
