Moodle Forums are very useful, and sometimes getting email by subscription is a great way to maintain communication. I frequently use the News Forum on each course to send students updates or announcements. I tend to send them homework assignments, but the students are really waiting to get cancellations and other important notices through Obirin Mail. Many users have email forwarded to their cellphones hoping they can sleep in or get an extra week to study for a quiz if the teacher is out.

Unfortunately, Moodle has spammed some users by repeatedly subscribing them to Forums without users realizing it. Here is one way to stop email from all regular Forums, but still allowing email from the important News Forum.

Download the one minute video Stopping Email From Moodle Part 1. The steps in this video are the same for students and for teachers. Please use the video in class, or embed it in your own Moodle course to help students learn how to stop unwanted email.

As teachers, follow the steps in this second video to prevent any user from subscribing to a specific Forum. It is very important to do this when you create the Forum. Download Stopping Email From Moodle Part-2.

This next video introduces a content management function: Hiding content from students, and then unhiding it. This is quite useful when developing a one year course. You can keep everything in one place, sharing content like glossaries or media, but showing only the current topics to students. Hiding sections is also a great way to keep works in progress hidden until they are ready to go.

This is simple guide on the procedures for submitting content for the elpweb.com sites.

Please don’t email files to me!

Please make sure all files you drop in the Drop Box are clearly labelled! I will be deleting things with no clear purpose.

Please keep the originals of any documents or files you submit, as after I have added the content to the web sites I will delete the files from my computer.

I will add the content to the sites as soon as I can!

Just remember that I will do all the behind-the-scenes stuff to get it online.

Thanks very much … in advance.

elpweb.com/courses

If you would like to add a short text description for your extensions course:

• Create a Word .doc, and name it: yourname_ext_description.doc

• Write a short and snappy description (2 sentences maximum)

• Write the name of the course /day / period.

• Save the file, and drop it into the ELP Web Drop Box in Shared Files.

If you would like to add a short audio description for your extensions course:

• Talk to either: Richard, Simon Hunter, Ted or Jim. We will show you how to use our portable audio recording machines.

• Record your description. Keep it to less than one minute.

• Talk to either: Richard, Simon Hunter, Ted or Jim. We will show you how to transfer the mp3 file to a computer.

• Rename the file: yourname_ext_description.mp3

• Drop it into the ELP Web Drop Box in Shared Files.

• Talk to me, or send me an email, and let me know the name of the course/day/period.

elpweb.com/resources

If you would like to add a self-introduction to your teacher page:

• Have a look at the introductions written by other teachers – just to get an idea of what we are after!

• Create a Word .doc, and name it: yourname_selfintro.doc

• Write your self-introduction. You be the judge of length / content / difficulty, but remember if it is too long, or too difficult to read, nobody will read it!

• Save the file, and drop it into the ELP Web Drop Box in Shared Files.

If you would like to add a self-introductory movie to your teacher page:

• In this case it’s best to talk to me about this before you start work.

• Once you do start work, if you are using iMovie to put the film together, any of the full-time teachers will be able to give you tips and guidance – as they have all authored their own movies.

Things to keep in mind:

• You don’t have to use any video content – powerful ‘movies’ can be made using only photographs.

• It’s very important that you talk to me before you start, as otherwise you may end up producing a movie in a format that is not compatible with elpweb.com.

• The final compression (making the file size small enough to be included on a web site) must be done by me, so if you are making your movie at home you are going to need a way of transfering a very large file to the PFC.

If you would like to propose a site for the Quick links section:

• Create a Word .doc, and name it: yourname_quicklinks.doc

• Write the following information: Name of site / URL / Short description written in easy-to-understand English / An indictation of difficulty (1,2,3) / Category it should be listed in (links can be listed in multiple categories)

• Indicate if you will be willing to write a guide for students on how to use the site. If you are willing to do, please read the next section.

If you would like to write a ‘How to’ guide for a site in the Quick links section:This could be a guide to a site you have proposed yourself, or one already on the site.

• Create a Word .doc, and name it: yourname_sitename_guide.doc

• Refer to a guide that I wrote to get an idea of what is required. (You are free to organize the guide in any way you like, but for continuity it may be better to follow the format I used.)

• Save the file, and drop it into the ELP Web Drop Box in Shared Files.

If you are a full time teacher wishing to submit content for the Foundation section:

• Talk to your level coordinator first.

• Talk to me so we can decide on the how the content will be presented on the web site.

• Generate the files, and drop them into the ELP Web Drop Box in Shared Files.

If you would like to submit content for the Skills Help section:

• Talk to me first, as there will be many things to talk about!
