Level 2 Reading teachers are due to give a minimum of five quizzes this semester. As well as the in-house quizzes that you can use with your classes, there are also a set of publisher tests. They are a little easier than the in-house ones, as vocabulary is not recycled from previous units.

May 18th, 2007 — Public Files
*Level 2 Reading teachers are due to give a minimum of five quizzes this semester. Of course, there’s the usual publisher quizzes available, but Level 2 team has been making a few alternative quizzes. Here are some things about them:
1) About half of the questions involve a cloze passage. So, there is some reading for the students. The passage is pretty similar to the textbook texts, so hopefully students will reread the passages from the previous week.
2) Half of the questions are from previous units. To do well on the quizzes, students will have to continue reviewing the vocab from previous weeks.
3) The tests will fit very well with the final test (see another posting). That is, the questions mostly tap the same receptive understanding of vocabulary, so the two go well together.
Let me know if you have any questions, problems, or feedback!

Level 2 Reading: Second Semester Weekly Vocabulary Quizzes with Answers
September 21st, 2006 — Public Files
The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noted that Level 2 Reading teachers are due to give a minimum of five quizzes this semester. Of course, there’s the usual publisher quizzes available, but I’ve made a few alternative quizzes. They are some modifications from last semester’s alternative quizzes, but essentially try to build on the success we had getting students to study vocab. Here are some things about them:
1) In response to feedback last semester, about half of the questions involve a cloze passage. So, there is a little more reading for the students. The passages are pretty similar to the textbook texts, so hopefully as well as students learning the vocab, they will also bother to reread the passages from the previous week. This all should reward and encourage the development of vocab depth.
2) To aid the acquisition of vocab, spaced recyling is very important. So, half of the questions on each quiz are from previous second semester units. To do well on the quizzes, students will have to continue reviewing the vocab from previous weeks. It’s important to tell students this (regardless of whether you use these quizzes or not)
3) The tests will fit very well with the mid and fnal test (see another posting). That is, the questions mostly tap the same receptive understanding of vocabulary, so the two go well together.
4) The first 4 questions are spelling questions, see the teachers’ sheet for the words to read out.
5) I’ve only made quizzes for the first few weeks, your feedback will influence how the later versions look.
Let me know if you have any questions, problems, or feedback!

Level 2 Reading: First Semester Final Test with Answers
July 5th, 2006 — Public Files
Here is the first semester final test with answers.
• There is no need to print out the tests, they will be printed for you.
• Apart from the spelling questions which are each worth half a point, each question is worth one point.
• To help prevent any cheating, there are two versions of the test available; Version A and Version B.
• To allow the tests to be re-used, the completed tests should be taken in and not returned to the students.
Extra Details
1) The test requires students to know enough of the words to put them into a cloze. There are also a lot of questions tapping a purely receptive understanding, and a few spelling items.
2) The cloze sections are summaries of the stories in the units. So, the students who regularly come to class will be at an advantage.
3) Some students will finish much quicker than others. To keep the fast finishers occupied, there is a riddle at the end. The answer is on the answer sheets.
4) There are two versions of the tests to provide an obstacle to any nefarious test taking strategies. The tests cover the same material, but the questions are in a different order.
5) The test can be given any time that suits the instructor. However, it’s inadvisable to leave it to the last class.
Let me know if you have any questions or find any problems!

Level 2 Reading: Mid-Term Vocabulary Test with Answers
May 9th, 2006 — Public Files
Level 2 Mid-Term Vocab Test version 2 with Answers.docFor the Level 2 Reading program, we give a test at the middle and end of the term. The tests form a large part of the students’ Reading grades.
1) The tests fit very well with the unit quizzes that I posted (see another posting). That is, the questions mostly tap the same receptive understanding of vocabulary, so the two go well together. There are also some spelling and gap-fill questions though.
2) The first 5 questions are spelling questions, see the teachers’ sheet for the words to read out.
3) Some students will finish much quicker than others. To to keep the fast finishers occupied, there is a puzzle at the end. The answer is on the teachers’ sheet.
4) There are two versions of the tests to provide an obstacle to any nefarious test taking strategies. The tests cover the same material, but the questions are in a different order. Feel free to use either version.

This is a folder which contains crossword puzzles for Units 1 to 8 from Totally True Book 3. The crosswords target all the ‘New Words’ from the Glossary and use the (rather naff) definitions from the book. There are 2 files per unit, a student puzzle and an answer key.
These puzzles can also be done online by students on the elpweb.com site. Here is the link http://elpweb.com/resources/slevel2reading.php?id=menu

Level 1 Level 2 Reading Totally True 1 Totally True 3Provoc and Vocabulary from Totally True 3 Chapters 1-4
December 14th, 2005 — Public Files
Provoc is a free Mac OS X application for vocabulary study. I’ve tested it myself recently and found it to be very useful. It is something that we might want to consider using on the eMacs in the FLSC. If you want to try it yourself, You can download some sets of vocabulary to practice with from the Provoc developer’s sharing website under the tab Vocabulary and practice your irregular French verbs.
Another way to try it might be to use a Provoc file I created from a provisional vocabulary spreadsheet. Download and import the files to allow flashcard and multiple choice vocabulary drills.
One very nice feature of Provoc is that it will print beautifully formatted flashcards in a variety of sizes. Here is a sample of small flashcards in pdf format to use for games or drilling. If you install Provoc yourself, you can make cards as large or as small as you like.
Maybe we can set this up in the FLSC, so students will be able to do it themselves?
flashcards Level 2 Provoc software Totally True 3 vocabularyTotally True 3: Chapters 1-4 Vocabulary List (in progress)
December 13th, 2005 — Public Files
I have entered the vocabulary for Totally True 3: Chapters 1-4 into an Excel spreadsheet with definitions which differ slightly from those in the textbook. This spreadsheet should make it easy to manage word lists, create simple quizzes, generate flashcards, and make other study materials. If we are all working from the same set of vocabulary, teaching and testing should be more consistent without forcing everyone to do exactly the same thing.
Download the Totally True 3: Chapters 1-4 vocabulary list (in progress).
The current fields in the spreadsheet are:
- ID
- UNIT
- WORD
- POS
- 日本語
- ENGLISH
- SYNONYM
- ANTONYM
- RELATED WORDS
If you think these need to be changed, go right ahead and make any changes you like to the spreadsheet and attach your version in a comment at the end of this post. I would suggest adding rather than deleting fields. If some information is not needed or wanted, those columns can be hidden as needed.
Obviously, this spreadsheet is not yet complete. The Japanese meaning of the target words is still missing for some vocabulary. I’ve added synonyms and antonyms just off the top of my head. Please add more as they come to you. Proofreading would be much appreciated!
This is meant to be an example of what can be done to organize materials for teachers and students.
